The Low Carbon Buildings Programme (LCBP) awards grants of up to £400 towards the installation of a solar thermal system.

There are a number of strings attached, which are listed on the LCBP website. These are:

• you should have a minimum of 270mm loft insulation
• your house should have insulated cavity walls, if possible
• you should have thermostatic radiator valves and modern central heating controls
• you should have a number of energy saving light bulbs
• you need either planning permission or a letter from your local authority stating that you do not require planning permission
