Planning permission

The responsibility for ascertaining if you require planning permission rests with you, the householder, and not with us, the installers. If planning permisson is required, then you must obtain it before the installation goes ahead.

Do you need planning permisson?

The answer is YES if

  • your house is a listed building
  • you live in a Conservation Area and the panels would be visible from the front of the house or the highway
  • you live in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB)
  • the panels would protrude more than 200 mm from the roof or wall
  • the top edge of the panels would be higher than the roof

BUT the panels should be sited such as to minimise the visual impact

Contact your local authority's building control department if you are not sure (see links below). Do not accept a wishy-washy answer. Make a note of the name of the officer, and time and date of your conversation.

The full text of appliccable legislation can be found the OPSI website.
